Celebrating the USA – A Denim Banner

May 30, 2017 By Faith Leave a Comment

Today we celebrate Memorial Day – a day to honor our veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice for love and freedom of country and countrymen.  Their bravery and courage have provided one of the greatest blessings one can have as an American.

As we begin a season of patriotic holidays, I thought I would make a simple applique banner to celebrate this great country.  I happened to have a little package of 5 denim pennant banners with grommets already in each corner, so I am going to make use of them.  You know my motto – if you’ve got it, use it!

APPLIQUE WALL ART FOR THE SEWING ROOM

June 22, 2016 By Faith Leave a Comment

I’ve had a lot of fun lately with raw edge applique.  It provides a great creative outlet without the tediousness of turning under the edges that I can never seem to get right.

I’ve been using the blanket stitch on my little Brother XR1355 machine and I love it. It does a great job; nice even stitches, and it covers the raw edges nicely.  Actually it’s not easy to even see the raw edges unless there is a stray thread.

I made this project to hang in the Sewing Ministry room.  Isn’t it cute?!

Vintage Spool Wreath

June 15, 2016 By Faith Leave a Comment

The ladies of the Quilt Ministry and I have started a sewing ministry. It all came about when Connie became gravely ill a few years back.

It was a scary time first, because my dear friend was so sick, and secondly, I worried about the fact that our quilt ministry would suffer. We still had Barbara, my other precious friend and mentor, who along with Connie keeps us going in the right direction but I feared that Connie might not be well enough to continue on with the ministry. I have come to rely on the both of them as friends and mentors.

My thoughts turned to the fact that sewing is not widely practiced among the younger crowd which made me worry for the future of the quilt ministry. So after Connie recuperated, we sat down and hashed out some ideas for this new ministry. Our church trustees welcomed our proposal for a new ministry with open arms and dedicated a room specifically for us.

A Winter Mantle

February 21, 2016 By Faith Leave a Comment

Winter mantle decor

After I took down the Christmas decorations from my mantle (failed to show that to you – bad blogger), I decorated it for winter.  Little did I know at the first of January that we would have such warm weather here in the south through the months of January and February. Oh, we’ve had a few nights into the twenties but we’ve had more than our fair share of warm weather.

I can’t help but think that we will surely have some bad weather before the season is over. And if you know anything about Southerners and the “s” word (snow, that is), you will know that an inch of it constitutes emergency action!

Patchwork Star Ornament/Door Hanger from a Vintage Quilt

October 25, 2015 By Faith 2 Comments

This project is in the same vein as the patchwork teddy bear. Just a simple primitive star shape that is stuffed and finished with a raw edge. A torn strip of the binding was used as the hanger.

Pallet Flag

Pallet flag (2)

When my youngest son decided to do over his room, part of his plan was to make and paint an American flag made of pallet wood. I know I’m partial, but I think he did an awesome job. It looks great on his wall. Frankly, I was a bit surprised at how well it turned out. I had not worked with pallet wood before, although I guess its not much different than just scrap wood like I use for a lot of my projects.

The real difference in the appearance was the fact that he just sanded off the high, splintery areas and after painting rubbed it with a nice dark stain. Once the stain went on, we stood back back and exclaimed, “Love it!”

Happy Independence Day!

A Painted Flag

Paint stick flag (1)

Yes, it’s another painted flag with more yet to come later this week! Seems like I’m stuck on painted flags for this year’s 4th of July celebration.

I made this flag years ago out of used paint stir sticks. After their intended use, I sanded off the blobs of old paint just enough to make them smooth and painted them with craft paint. I used six sticks for the flag itself, broke another in half and hot glued those pieces vertically across the back to hold everything in place. Then I drilled two small holes at the top and ran a small wire through for the hanger. The little jute rope with wooden hearts came wrapped around some stationary. Nothing goes to waste around here!

See you tomorrow for more patriotic inspiration! God bless America!

Celebrating America’s Birthday

June 29, 2015 By Faith 2 Comments

Scrappy American flag decor

In honor of the upcoming Independence Day holiday, let’s celebrate with a weeks worth of patriotic inspiration. I’m getting a little scrappy for today’s project – as in scrap wood, fabric scraps, and some leftover (aka scrap) paint.

I came across a square piece of plywood in my wood pile that I painted blue and stamped with some stars in white. I drilled a few small holes across the bottom of the wood, tore some red and white fabric scraps to length and inserted them through the drilled holes affixing with a lark’s head knot. I drilled a couple of larger holes at the top corners and fed a piece of rope through knotting it in the front to use as a hanger. Done. Quick and easy.

Join me again tomorrow for another easy project. Happy Birthday, America!!!

xoxo, Faith
