Patchwork Star Ornament/Door Hanger from a Vintage Quilt

October 25, 2015 By Faith 2 Comments

This project is in the same vein as the patchwork teddy bear. Just a simple primitive star shape that is stuffed and finished with a raw edge. A torn strip of the binding was used as the hanger.

The vintage quilt backing was used to back this ornament.

My mind’s eye saw a great rustic star shape that can hang as a Christmas tree ornament or could be used as a doorknob hanger. Admittedly, this is my least favorite project of the (re)purposed vintage quilt. No specific reason why, just don’t like it as I do the other projects.

I added a wire with jingle bells to see if I liked it better. I always like to have a door hanger that makes a little sound when the door opens and closes. Reminds me of when my boys were younger and I had a chime or bell on every door so I could hear if they went out without my knowledge.

Because of its rustic nature, I think I would like it better to have some rusted bells or maybe a little sign that says “shine” or “twinkle” or something.

My first thought was not to post it just for the sake of posting. However, I decided to go ahead with it for two reasons. First, I committed to doing this Write 31 Days challenge and I’m determined to do it. I am one of those people that if you tell me I can’t, I’ll do everything I can to do it. Not to be contrary or to say I told you so, but to prove to myself that I can. [Now that I say that watch my computer zonk out on me because it is acting really weird right now.] But more importantly I want to be real about the fact that some projects simply don’t turn out how we envision them. You know what? That’s okay because how do you know it won’t turn out right if you don’t try at all? Perhaps there is something to be learned from a process that appears to be a fail.

What’s the verdict? Success or fail?

Anything you would do differently? Suggestions, please.

xo, Faith

I like the star! It’s kinda a different star shape which of course makes me like it 🙂

I’m so glad you like it. It’s really hard to make a perfect star especially when you’re trying to place the pattern so that you get the best of the fabric scraps. Imperfect was what I was going for; mission accomplished! 😉
