When I decided on my topic for this 31 day writing challenge, I started a list of ideas for (re)purposing my friend’s vintage quilt. Although I would like to have thirty projects from the quilt, I doubt it will happen. Yet surprisingly I have come up with more ideas than I anticipated.
One of my mentors in the prayer quilt ministry at church has been gracious enough to visit me here at Faith Stitched Home as I write through this challenge. As always she lifts me up with words of encouragement and inspiration. She mentioned an apron being a favorite item so of course, I had to go with it!
A few months back she invited members from the prayer quilt and shepherding ministries for lunch. Her home was so elegant and inviting and something that caught my eye right away was a yo-yo table runner on her sofa table. Now you might be thinking, “Yo-yo runner for elegant decor?” Let me tell you, it rocked. She is so gifted with needle and thread. I must ask her for a photo to show you sometime.
Anyway, since she suggested an apron and I was so inspired by her yo-yo runner, I (re)purposed the wedding ring quilt using some of the patches to form large yo-yos and stitched them to the apron.
The apron was (re)purposed from an old thrifted tablecloth. I cut the apron so that the hemmed edge served as the hem of the apron. The lining of the vintage quilt was used for the ties.
I was thrilled to come up with a project that could use the wedding ring quilt patches. They were so worn and small, I was at a loss for how to use many of them. Thanks to my mentor’s suggestion and inspiration, this little beauty will now have an apron made with scraps from her grandmother’s quilt.
Have you ever made fabric yo-yos?
xoxo, Faith
