Confirmation Prayer Square

In the United Methodist Church, spring is typically the time that the youth of our congregation become members. At around 12 years of age and older, the youth is invited to become a member. They take months of classes to learn about God, Jesus, the Bible, and the practices and history of our denomination. During this time they are called confirmands.

All their hard work and learning culminates in being confirmed as a member of the church. If they were not previously baptized as an infant, they can be baptized at this time too.

The Prayer Quilt Ministry members prepared a prayer square for each of the confirmands. Here is the one that I made for a young man that is special to our family.

Oxford Shirt Quilt Top

I’ve mentioned our church’s Prayer Quilt Ministry before. We make lap quilts from donated materials to give to members of the community when they are facing a trial of some sort, such as an illness or loss. Before being presented to the recipient, strings are secured around the quilt. The quilt is laid across the altar rail and the congregation is invited to come pray for the person and then tie a knot in the string. The knotted strings are a tangible reminder to the quilt recipient that they have been remembered in prayer. The purpose is to bring the peace, hope, strength, and comfort of Christ to them during a time of anxiety and suffering.

Being a part of this ministry is one of the greatest blessings of my life. It allows me to use my God-given talent of sewing for His glory. Getting to work with some very talented, loving women in the ministry is a blessing as well. I’ve spoken of my mentors in several previous posts here, here, here, and here.

Designing and piecing is my favorite part of creating a quilt. The ladies of the ministry are so gracious to allow me to do that part while they do the (boring and tedious to me) tasks of basting, quilting, and binding the quilt tops that I piece.

Definitely preppy, this quilt top is made from thrift store oxford cloth men’s dress shirts in pastel colors.

Christmas Stocking from a Vintage Quilt

Halloween is this week and you know what that means – Christmas is just around the corner! I have already started seeing Christmas items in stores for at least the last two weeks. Hence the inspiration for today’s (re)purpose project from the vintage quilt.

The body of the stocking is made from leftover curtain lining. I would have preferred to use drop cloth because it is more folksy like the patchwork but I used all that up with the other projects.

This project is in the same vein as the patchwork teddy bear. Just a simple primitive star shape that is stuffed and finished with a raw edge. A torn strip of the binding was used as the hanger.

Storage Box from a Vintage Quilt

I have (re)purposed a cardboard box. Perhaps I have stooped to a new low; I don’t know, you tell me!

I started with a box that came with those little packages of ramen noodle soup. Now before you judge me, please know that is not what I feed my family. Two of my boys who are in their early twenties like a good ramen soup in between meals occasionally. It’s a rite of passage for college age kids to eat ramen, isn’t it?

Apron from Grandmother’s Quilt

When I featured the apron that I made from the (re)purposed quilt, I mentioned that my inspiration came from one of the wonderful ladies that heads up our prayer quilt ministry at church. She’s been reading my series of posts on the (re)purposed quilt and suggested that I sew an apron. She is always an inspiration to me and upon her suggestion I knew right away what I wanted to make.

She also made her own (re)purposed apron from a quilt top that her grandmother had made but had never quilted. She told me that her grandmother had pressed all the seams open and had blanket stitched each raw edge! Oh my goodness, can you imagine the work involved in that process! She wasn’t sure why her grandmother had done that; the quilt was made from everyday common fabrics and it wasn’t a special pattern. It was just large squares stitched together patchwork style.
