Confirmation Prayer Square

June 8, 2016 By Faith Leave a Comment

In the United Methodist Church, spring is typically the time that the youth of our congregation become members. At around 12 years of age and older, the youth is invited to become a member. They take months of classes to learn about God, Jesus, the Bible, and the practices and history of our denomination. During this time they are called confirmands.

All their hard work and learning culminates in being confirmed as a member of the church. If they were not previously baptized as an infant, they can be baptized at this time too.

The Prayer Quilt Ministry members prepared a prayer square for each of the confirmands. Here is the one that I made for a young man that is special to our family.

Antique Easter Angel Image

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as He said.

Matthew 28: 5-6

What a glorious day to celebrate. He is risen indeed!

Halleljuah!!!

Wishing you Easter blessings, Faith

Oxford Shirt Quilt Top

March 6, 2016 By Faith 2 Comments

I’ve mentioned our church’s Prayer Quilt Ministry before.   We make lap quilts from donated materials to give to members of the community when they are facing a trial of some sort, such as an illness or loss.  Before being presented to the recipient, strings are secured around the quilt.  The quilt is laid across the altar rail and the congregation is invited to come pray for the person and then tie a knot in the string.  The knotted strings are a tangible reminder to the quilt recipient that they have been remembered in prayer.  The  purpose is to bring the peace, hope, strength, and comfort of Christ to them during a time of anxiety and suffering.

Being a part of this ministry is one of the greatest blessings of my life.  It allows me to use my God-given talent of sewing for His glory.  Getting to work with some very talented, loving women in the ministry is a blessing as well.  I’ve spoken of my mentors in several previous posts here, here, here, and here.

Designing and piecing is my favorite part of creating a quilt.  The ladies of the ministry are so gracious to allow me to do that part while they do the (boring and tedious to me) tasks of basting, quilting, and binding the quilt tops that I piece.

Definitely preppy, this quilt top is made from thrift store oxford cloth men’s dress shirts in pastel colors.

A Winter Mantle

February 21, 2016 By Faith Leave a Comment

Winter mantle decor

After I took down the Christmas decorations from my mantle (failed to show that to you – bad blogger), I decorated it for winter.  Little did I know at the first of January that we would have such warm weather here in the south through the months of January and February. Oh, we’ve had a few nights into the twenties but we’ve had more than our fair share of warm weather.

I can’t help but think that we will surely have some bad weather before the season is over. And if you know anything about Southerners and the “s” word (snow, that is), you will know that an inch of it constitutes emergency action!

A Perfect Rosebud

A Perfect Rosebud

Isn’t God’s artistry perfect in every way?

Look at that rosebud. Have you ever seen anything more perfect and beautiful?

I’m sure we could all say yes but today, for today, this is His perfection. This and the ones we love so much.

Basic Sewing Supplies List

January 19, 2016 By Faith Leave a Comment

So you want to start sewing and don’t know what all you will need.

You really only need just a few basic supplies.

 Here are my suggestions:

Basic sewing supplies

  1. A good pair of scissors is a top priority.  Whether you think you will become a serious seamstress or not, investing in a good pair of scissors is a good idea. Be sure they feel comfortable in your hand. Above all, dedicate your scissors strictly to sewing. Never ever cut anything but fabric and thread with your sewing scissors.
  2. A seam ripper – yes, you will need a seam ripper! It doesn’t matter how long you have been sewing, this tool will serve you well. No seamstress, however experienced, is ever exempt of making mistakes and this little baby is a life saver. Be sure to have one in your stash.
  3. An iron, you say? Indeed, an iron is one of the biggest necessities for a seamstress. I keep an ironing board and iron right next to my sewing machine at the ready. It is very important to press your work as you sew. It can mean the difference in a good or a bad finished product.
  4. A measuring tool is obviously  a necessity. Pictured above is a dressmaker tape and a seam marker. I use my seam marker a lot. I highly recommend that beginners invest in one as they are most helpful. It helps when marking and checking your seam allowances and hemming.
  5.  Speaking of marking, its great to have a non-permanent marking tool on hand. I’ve shown dressmaker chalk and a water soluable marker. The white chalk is good for marking dark fabrics. It also comes in handy for marking hems so you don’t run the risk of your pins falling out when the garment is taken off. The water soluable marker is good for lighter fabrics. It makes a clear mark that will not come off (unlike chalk) unless you dampen the fabric.
  6. Dressmaker pins are a must. Personally I like long ones; no real reason why, just easier to pick up maybe. Mine above are gathered onto a magnetic pin dish. I had always used a pincushion until just a few years ago when a friend gifted this one to me and now I cannot live without it. When removing pins in a hurry, you can practically just toss them at the pin dish and it grabs them. Also if you drop a pin on the floor and can’t find it, just wave the pin dish over the area it was dropped and it will find the pin. Additionally, a good set of needles (sometimes called “sharps”) in varied sizes is always a good investment for your sewing box.
  7. A few spools of basic color threads is great to have on hand. I always have white, black, and beige. Of course its great to have a matching thread for you project fabric. Those three colors come in handy in a pinch. And I tend to be in a pinch on a regular basis, but that is a whole other post.
  8. While not a necessity, I threw a thimble into the mix because it can sure save the fingers. Get one if you like, or not, totally up to you.

If you’re just beginning and not sure whether a lot of sewing is in your future, I would suggest you find a very basic and inexpensive sewing machine. A machine with the most basic stitches will work fine. You might even look for one at a thrift store or on Craigslist. Sometimes a sewing machine repair shop might have some old ones for sale.

Now, go buy your supplies and get started on your sewing journey. I’m here to help any way that I can. Any questions, so far?

xo, Faith

How To Sew On A Button

January 11, 2016 By Faith Leave a Comment

Recently I realized there are some basic sewing techniques that are unknown to some. It dawned on me when a sewing friend mentioned that she did not really know how to sew in a zipper and she is an advanced seamstress/quilter and has been for many years. It seems there is always something new to learn even when you are very familiar with a subject.

So I was inspired to put together an ongoing series of basic sewing hints, tips, information, and easy sewing projects. Like my friend, I don’t know everything but am happy to share what I do know.

For starters, I am going to show you how to sew on a button. This is a task that everyone needs to know how to do – yes, everyone – even the guys. Today I will be working on reattaching a button to the waistband of my husband’s pants.

Here are the necessary supplies. You will need scissors, a needle, and thread.

An Old Ornament Commemorates a New Year

January 2, 2016 By Faith Leave a Comment

Happy new year, friends, from long lost me. The holidays kicked in and this little space was left neglected. Truly I meant to visit here to show some Christmas around my house.

I got crazy busy with a commissioned sewing project (I’ll show you that later) and then a friend wanted me to make fifty two blackberry wine cakes for her clients for Christmas gifts. Yes, you read that right, 52 cakes that I baked over the course of two weekends.

This is only about half of the cakes piled on my dining room table!

My tree was up but sat there undecorated until December 21st, the first day of Christmas break from school. My mantle wasn’t decorated until Christmas Eve. All that baking, working my two part time jobs, sewing, shopping, and just life in general simply got the better of me.

But now that the holidays have come and passed, I feel much more relaxed and rested and wanted to pop in to say “Hi” and wish you all a very happy new year.

Dear hubby gave me this Radko ornament fifteen years ago. I collected Radko for a while and now you just don’t find them anymore except maybe on Ebay. I always loved them because of their old world look and brilliant color. I’ve got about ten of them and this one is my favorite.

Coloring Book Cover

November 16, 2015 By Faith Leave a Comment

Coloring books for adults have become very popular these days. We grown-ups are learning that coloring can be a relaxing way to unwind – a fact that we forgot from our younger days.

Our Glitter Girl, our eldest son’s girlfriend, had a birthday recently. Part of his gift to her was a set of nice markers. She is a very hard worker with a full time job while she works toward completion of her doctorate degree. I can only imagine how stressful it would be trying to do it all. To say she is busy is an understatement. She has a creative streak and likes to create art in what little spare time she has.

To go with her set of markers, I bought her a grown-up coloring book – a nice one with thick paper and beautiful images to color. I also made a book cover for it.

Veteran’s Day: Thankful for our Heroes

November 12, 2015 By Faith Leave a Comment

This day is set aside to remember our veterans with gratitude and appreciation. Can you imagine where our country would be without them? Their dedication, hard work, and sacrifice provides us with our freedom. To simply say thank you seems so small compared to what so many have given.

The most beloved veteran in my heart and mind is my dad. He bravely served in WW2 in the South Pacific arena. He was in the Army serving as a medic and cook. He was a truly wonderful man and it was a tremendous blessing to have him as my father.
